about

A William Soutar poem of eloquence and clarity.
Soutar, a Perthshire poet who often used the Scots
language in his verse, was struck down with an illness in his later years which confined him to bed.
Able to move only his arms and his legs, he created
much of his work during this period.

This poem has a resonance which I find very stirring.

lyrics

SONG words: soutar music: thomson

WHERE YON BROKEN BRIG HANGS OVER
WHERE YON WATER MAKES NO SOUND
BABYLON BLOWS BY IN STOUR
DEEP OVER DEEP FOR ANY DEPTH
FAR ENOUGH AND YOU WOULD DROWN
SALT OR SWEET FOR THE MOUTH

GOING DOWN WITH A SONG
GOING DOWN

BABYLON BLOWS BY IN STOUR
WHERE YON WATER MAKES NO SOUND
DARKNESS IS YOUR ONLY DOOR
GOING DOWN WITH A SONG
GOING DOWN
